Too bad rolls
These are the last of the color rolls of Kodak Max 400 that were given to me with my camera. They've been expired for about 20 years but only one of them has a lot of color shift (more on possibly why later). To me it looks like the highlights shifted pink and the shadows shifted green. I've also color corrected some of my favorites.
There's this mini-canyon behind my house, but to enter my street you have to cross a bridge. I decided to get down into it (minor climbing required) and explore it while taking photos.

First roll
This was shot at box speed and has the color shift I mentioned in the intro.
Ok bad start I know, you could hire 5 police detectives and they would go insane attempting to find the subject of the image. This does a pretty good job of showing the color shift though. The ground should just be a nomral dirt brown but it got very red. The rocks should be white too, but instead it looks like Mars started chucking rocks at Earth.
Alright getting better, the subject is obviously the rock wall and I think it was composed pretty well. For some reason I wanted to bracket it as well, but I didn't even go a full stop. I like the first one more since the extra exposure helps give the wall more detail.
Ok we're not at the same level as the first picture but it's pretty boring. I think I thought the curve of the tree looked neat, but I think a different angle would be better. Maybe if I had moved more to the right it would've been better. The canyon is pretty dense with plants and puddles so I might've just not been able to get a good angle.
I think I liked how the bridge was obscured by the trees but without context I don't think you'd be able to tell.
I really like this one, don't know why, I just like it. The stairs lead up to the street, and the sign that tells you not to vandalise. I actually don't understand why it's there or why anyone would care about vandalism here to begin with. All the graffiti is either under the bridge or on the wall to the left, which is completely out of sight from the street so it isn't disrupting anything. And this isn't even a trail, so the deer and bears go down here more than humans. It would've been more useful to have a sign about littering cause it's gotten to the point where I'm gonna bring a trash bag next time.
I think the angle was cool, but it was just too underexposed. I wanted to keep the bridge in frame but looking at it now I think the shadow would've been enough to tell.
If it didn't look like there was a magnitude 4.0 earthquake I think it would've just been boring.
Definitely one of my favorites so much so I attempted color correction. The most I could do was get rid of the greenish tint to everything, but there's still a lot of red which I wasn't able to get rid of. This was a photo where I thought it just had to be a banger when taking it. The rocks and trees were shaped around the puddle in a way that I really liked. Of course the giant dead tree had to be in the way, but maybe there's a better angle for it?
I guess not. My camera's lens can zoom, and boy did I zoom. I zoomed so much gale force winds spawned out of nowhere! I swear it's true! It's not because I was winded from the very minor amount of climbing to get down at all!
Easily top 3 from these rolls for me. I think it's the best angle of the bridge possible. I metered just enough for the shadows to still get a decent amount of detail in the highlights (hey maybe I could call that metering the middle or midtones?) and I think it worked really well. A nice detail is the reflection in the puddle. Basically the same color correction as before as well.
Haven't really made up my mind about this one, I can't tell if it's boring or simple. Maybe simple is boring? or is boring simple?
As I headed back home I took one final photo. I think it's a good one to end on for this roll, resurfacing home after a long expedition into the unknown.
Second roll
Alright this is where the fun begins, this roll doesn't really appear to have color shift. This could be because the lab I got this developed in decided to color correct after scanning, but then why wouldn't they do it for the first roll? Something I've yet to mention is that I'm pretty stupid, so when I heard online that you should PULL a stop for every 10 years color film has been expired, I misread it as PUSH. If you're not a photography nerd that just means everything is gonna look pretty dark because the film isn't getting enough light to represent what things should look like.
The first bit of the roll was me hanging out with my friends. We took the bus to pick up books for school, and the main section was pretty eerie since nobody needed to go there.
This is a good example of the effects of pushing 2 stops. In real life they were lit enough that I could see their faces, but here its hard to tell the difference between their shirts and pants.
I took this on our way back to my friend's house. I think I liked how the house was framed between all the trees, but if I was more to the left I think it would've worked better.
Alright, first photo back in the canyon. This one could also make detectives go insane from trying to find the subject. Maybe the first photo of the canyon I take is cursed?
Well that was a quick recovery. Despite the shadows rivaling the emptiness of space, this is easily my favorite photo I've taken so far. The abyssal shadows make it seem kind of unreal or like a painting, which I think is really cool. Because there isn't really any color shift I'm leaving it unedited.
Yeah same thing with the previous tree stump picture, except this time I'm leaning more toward boring. I remember wanting to keep the bridge in frame, but with the lack of detail I don't know if it adds much.
Bleh. Everything around the pipe is too boring.
Just a waste of film, too underexposed.
I wanted to get a good shot of the graffiti under the bridge and I think the angle works well. I bracketed this and the photo with more exposure obviously does better at giving it more detail.
Might've been cooler if it wasn't underexposed. I think I'll revisit the bridge and try to take some pictures of the graffiti with my phone to document it.
Not too sure how I feel about this one. The water probably has enough bacteria to evolve into humans though.
When crossing the bridge there's this messed up tree branch that I always thought looked cool, but I don't think I was able to get it right.
That's better.
I also always thought this person's car looked kind of neat with how they park it infront of their house. Unfortunately they were loading something so all the doors were open but I took a photo anyway.
Well that's the end of the rolls. There was also an expired black and white roll that came with my camera, which I shot last week but I'm gonna develop that with some new rolls. If you never hear from me again I either got mauled by a bear or I got accepted into a deer family trying to explore more of the canyon.
